Do We Truly Value our Historical Built Environment?

Orleans prides itself on its distinct Cape Cod character. The Local Comprehensive Plan, along with materials from the Orleans Chamber of Commerce and others, consistently highlight historic preservation as a core value. Yet, actions tell a different story. Over the years, the town has lost many centuries-old structures. Attempts to create an historic district were defeated at Town Meeting. Most recently, the loss of an iconic historic property sparked widespread community outcry over the fading of our local culture.
Does Orleans actually value its historic properties, or are we just talking the talk? Join us for a candid, forward-looking discussion designed to examine our past reactive regret and move toward proactive solutions.
- Learn the Facts: Discover exactly what our current bylaws can—and cannot—do to protect local historic properties
- Hear Regional Successes: See how neighboring Cape towns work to use historic charm for economic growth and strong community and how the building community participates
