Orleans Community Center: Imagine All It Can Be

Orleans Citzens Forum
Monday, January 25, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Does Orleans need a community center? If so, why and who would benefit? This issue was raised at the Town Meeting in October, preceded by a survey initiated by the town’s Recreation Advisory Committee. To delve a little deeper, four panelists will briefly cover various aspects of the questions embedded in the decision making process.

Kevin Galligan, Select Board Chair,  will talk about the history of recreation and community spaces in Town including current efforts of the Community Building Renovation Committee and the increasing need for more space and more recreational offerings for all ages.

Carolyn Carey, Director of the Harwich Community Center, will share lessons learned over her twenty years as Director of the Harwich Community Center.

Tracy Murphy and Kyle Wibby, Chair and Co-chair of the Orleans Recreation Advisory Committee, will speak about data collected from community members including current needs, programs presently offered and their vision of a community center.

The availability and cost of housing is a problem for many people throughout the United States.
In Orleans, many residents are experiencing a housing crisis, and others cannot afford to move here.

  • Teachers should be able to find reasonable cost housing near our schools
  • First responders must be able to live and work within the required perimeter of their stations
  • Seniors looking to downsize and stay in town may be priced out of the market
  • Seniors should be able to have their children stay or move near them and help with their care
  • We need to provide housing for tradespeople, waitstaff, retailers and others who serve the community

We have assembled a great panel to bring us up to date on the challenges facing us and the solutions being worked on. The panel and discussion will include:

Nancy Renn, Affordable Housing Committee Chair
– Housing needs, Housing Survey
– Integration of housing and community

Alan McClennen, Affordable Housing Trust Chair
– Existing and potential housing projects
– Financing options for housing

George Meservey, Director of Planning and Community Development, Town of Orleans
– Opportunities for housing development
– Zoning and sewer changes affect on housing

Andrea Aldana, Director of Housing Advocacy, Community Development Partnership (CDP)
– Lower Cape perspective on housing needs
– CDP housing programs
